Who can take the online course?
A. Residents of California and non-residents of California who are specifically seeking their CCW permit through Lassen County, Modoc County, or Plumas County, California. If you are not seeking a CCW permit specifically with the County Sheriff’s Office in Lassen County, Modoc County, or Plumas County, California, do not purchase this course as you will not be able to use it to satisfy the instructional portion of your permit.
So I can purchase the online course if I am not a resident of California?
A. Yes, provided you are seeking your CCW permit through Lassen County, Modoc County, or Plumas County, California.
So I can purchase this course if I am a resident of California, but not a Lassen County resident?
A. Yes, provided you are seeking your CCW permit through Lassen County, Modoc County, or Plumas County, California.
What counties have approved the online course?
A. Currently, only Lassen County, Modoc County, and Plumas County, California. We are working on getting the approval of other counties in California and will add them under the approved course list as they become available, and update this page accordingly.
How do I complete my live-fire portion of the CCW application process?
A. Find a certified instructor in your area and contact them to schedule your live-fire instructional session. If you are in our area, you may call instructor Mike Pickens at 530-249-4626 or reach us at capofftrainingacademy@gmail.com to arrange a live-fire instruction with us; we are more than happy to do so! Qualification instructions & requirements for the live-fire portion are accessible in the PDF provided in the user portal, and at this link.
How does the process work?
A. Purchase the online course option that corresponds to you specifically (resident vs non-resident, renewal vs first time permit seeker) from our store. There, you will be prompted to pay for the course and create an account. After you’ve created an account, your user portal will give you access to the course for 90 days. Complete it at your leisure. After you have completed all lessons of the course, you will be awarded a certificate with your name and date of course completion on it. You may bring this certificate to a certified instructor to complete the live-fire portion of your CCW application and thus finish the application process. Note: completion of this course alone DOES NOT constitute permission to carry your firearm as you MUST still arrange for a live-fire instruction session with a certified instructor (which you must pass) and continue the application process with the County Sheriff’s Office in the county you are applying in (Lassen, Modoc, or Plumas) to complete the application process.
How does the course work?
A. Both courses (both the initial 16 hour and/or the 8 hour renewal course) are structured the same way: you complete course modules until you reach the very end of the course, wherein you will be awarded a certificate after a final test. Nearly every module requires you watch an instructional video on the module topic with instructors Mike Pickens, Jeff Holtzclaw, and Chris Mancebo from beginning until end, and then proceed to a quiz about the video you watched. You will do this for each module of the entire course until you reach the end and take the final cumulative test, which you must pass to be awarded the certificate.
